History
Built in 1916, the Greenwich Family Y was considered one of the most beautiful YMCAs in the country. Designed by M.L. and H.G. Emory, the building was created in the style of Georgian Revival with Beaux Arts flourishes. Made possible through the generous funding and vision of Rebecca Witherell, in memory of her husband Nathaniel, the Y soon became one of the focal points of the community and remained strong for many years, filling an important role in this town, not only as a physical fitness facility, but as an educational and therapeutic center, day camp and numerous other functions.
Originally designed for a membership of 600 boys and men, the YMCA facility was considered state-of-the-art when it was constructed.
