Greenwich, CT, Thursday, May 24, 2007- Three Greenwich High School Senior Interns were treated to a hardhat tour of the YMCA's construction site led by Paul Dye of Pecora Brothers, Inc., the YMCA's owner's representative.
"We saw everything from locker rooms to the new 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic-size pool," said Victoria Andersen, 17, of Greenwich, one of the Greenwich High School Senior Interns, as she talked about how the new Y facility will meet the needs of the community. "I've been interning with the Communications Director here at the Y so it was interesting to be on the construction site after talking about it the past couple weeks," Andersen said.
The Y's expansion and renovation project includes a 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic-size swimming pool, a new gymnasium (with racquetball and squash courts), a full-day childcare center and a parking garage. In addition, while maintaining the building's historic architecture, the current facility is undergoing a complete renovation and space reallocation to better accommodate existing programs and allow for new initiatives such as youth sports, senior programs, water therapy, gymnastics and programs for children with special needs.
While on the tour, the interns took a closer look at the construction project in action. By going behind the scenes, while walking the construction site, the interns observed masonry work which would not be visible from the street.
"I enjoyed showing where I spend most of my work day to the interns," said Paul Dye, a civil engineer. "Taking the interns on the tour was a good way to get the word out about the opening of the new Olympic pool this fall," Dye said.
