YMCA Leaders Club Learns About Political Leadership from Alan Schlesinger, Former Candidate for U.S. Senate

Greenwich, CT-Wednesday, April 11, 2007….Alan Schlesinger, Connecticut attorney and former candidate for U.S. Senate, encouraged members of the YMCA's Leaders Club to take an active interest in government at a lecture at the Greenwich Family YMCA. Schlesinger visited the YMCA to discuss his common sense solutions for tempering the effects of the baby boomer generation on Social Security and Medicare.

Schlesinger related his experience working at the local Republican headquarters beginning at age 9. He encouraged the middle school students to get involved with their local government, stating that politics are not just for adults.

"You can have a tremendous impact at age 12, perhaps more than an adult," Schlesinger said. "You can make the changes and you can make a difference. Younger leaders do a better job moving the ball forward than older ones. We'll be handing the ball off to you soon- are you ready?" he asked.

Schlesinger told the group that the government must face up to future obligation by planning for the exponential increase in elderly medical expenditures from the baby boomer generation by planning now with realistic policies with affordable eligibility requirements. He warned of assigning the daunting task to the middle school students assembled. Schlesinger cited David M. Walker, the comptroller general of the U.S. General Accountability Office, who has been touring the country warning the American public to tell the government that it's time to steer the nation off the path to financial ruin.

Schlesinger served two terms as Mayor of the City of Derby and also served six terms as a State representative. Since running for U.S. Senate last year, he has returned to his successful law practice in Shelton, CT.

Leaders Club is designed to expose middle school students to a professional business setting and introduce them to successful leaders and community resources. The program teaches students to make informed decisions and work as a group. Participants develop a product or service that they then market. Community leaders like Schlesinger, Mary Ann Morrison of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce and others teach participants about marketing, customer service, public speaking and dressing for success.

The Leaders Club will host Greenwich resident Ned Lamont, one of Schlesinger's opponents for U.S. Senate, on Wednesday, June 6 as part of the Leaders Club Lecture Series. For more information, please contact Debra Marchese at 203-869-1630.
