News & Press :: New Swim Coach

Greenwich, CT-May 2, 2007… The Greenwich Family YMCA is pleased to announce that Mark Sedlak will serve as the new Head Coach of the Marlins Swim Team. Sedlak previously served as Head Junior Coach and Assistant Senior Coach for the New Canaan YMCA Caimans as well as Aquatics Director and Head Coach at Greenwich Country Club. This fall, the Marlins Swim Team will find a home in the Y's brand new 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic-size pool.

"Mark is an up and coming coach. He has a solid reputation, and the experience to take the Greenwich Family YMCA Marlins to the next level following many years as a top competitor and excellent coaching work at the New Canaan Y and Greenwich Country Club," said John Eikrem, YMCA President and CEO. "We are confident that Mark will be an asset to our children and families," Eikrem said. Sedlak will work along with current Marlins coaches Kristina Lewis and Connie Wu.

Mark Sedlak has been coaching the Caimans since 2002. During his tenure, Sedlak coached multiple Connecticut Age Group champions, YMCA New England champions and YMCA National Age Group top 16 swimmers. Sedlak coached the Caimans' 11-12 year old boy's 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams to the 2005-06 Connecticut State Age Group Championship. That same year the boy's 200-yard freestyle relay set the YMCA New England record. The relay team broke a record which was set by Sedlak himself, as part of the 1986 New Canaan YMCA team.

A longtime swimmer, Sedlak captured the 13-14 national title in the 50-yard freestyle, for which he still holds the state record. Sedlak went on to achieve the National High School All-American champion in this event while swimming for The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ. He also swam as the freestyle anchor of the men's National Record breaking 200-yard medley relay, and was selected as a member of the 1989 United States National Team.

Sedlak earned a B.A. in Journalism from The University of North Carolina in 1995. While attending UNC, he was a varsity member of the Tar Heels Swimming Team, where he was an All American, ACC Champion, NCAA finalist and Olympic Trials qualifier.
