News & Press :: Diving Club Member Qualified for Amateur Athletic Union Nationals |
|
November 20, 2007- Greenwich, CT . . . A member of the Greenwich Family YMCA Marlins Diving Club qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Nationals at the Big Apple Invitational in Long Island. Greenwich resident, Emily Stotesbery, 13, has been diving for four years. On Saturday, October 20, she qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Nationals for the second time in her diving career. The qualifying score for her age group, girls 12-13, was 205 points and she scored a 227 at the meet. Stotesbery was very focused and had a remarkably consistent meet-scoring fives and sixes on all seven of her dives. Last year, Emily competed at nationals in Orlando, FL and placed 18th out of 24 competitors in her age group, which was also her rank in the nation for her age group. "It's a great accomplishment to qualify, but even greater since she qualified so early in the season," said YMCA Marlins Diving Club Head Coach, Billy McGowan. "Emily is a very dedicated diver and has a great personality. She's a great teammate and the heart of the Marlins Diving Club. She has the potential to be a nationally ranked diver and perhaps be a National Champion in the future." Next year's AAU Nationals will take place in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. |
