News & Press :: Mastoloni Qualifies for AAU National Meet

Greenwich, CT-January 21, 2008… Fifteen-year-old James Mastoloni of Rye, NY qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union [AAU] National meet - at the Boston Area Diving Invitational this past weekend.

Coming off a solid performance in the 3-meter event, Mastoloni used that momentum to qualify for nationals in the 1-meter event. Representing the Greenwich YMCA Marlins Diving Club from Greenwich, CT, he scored a 266 to come in second place in his event, the boys 14-15 year old JO competition. The National qualifying score is 265.

The Marlins are coached by Billy McGowan. Each of the 7 Marlins divers entered in the meet had good performances, but James Mastoloni's Nationals Qualifying performance and personal record was the highlight of the weekend. It will be his first experience diving on a national level.

"This has been THE goal for James from the beginning of the season", said McGowan, who took over as Head Coach of the Marlins when the new Olympic Aquatics Center was built at the Greenwich Family YMCA. "James has worked extremely hard, practicing 4-5 days a week, to achieve this goal", McGowan continued. "I'm very happy for him, he deserves it".

The AAU National Meet will be held in Orlando, FL in late July.

The Greenwich YMCA Marlins Divers will next head to the New Canaan YMCA for the Whirlwind Diving Invitational, where McGowan is hopeful to come away with a few more National Qualifiers.
