The first few months of 2007 have been busy at the Greenwich Family YMCA. The mild winter weather has been great for our outdoor construction crews, who have been hard at work on the Natatorium.

In anticipation of the September pool opening, crews have been working diligently to build the Natatorium, including working over time and on weekends. After placing the trusses in late December, crews placed metal decking over the structural steel to form the roof. The front of the construction site was recently excavated to make way for the deep end of the pool and the pool mechanical rooms. Next, the crews erected forms and placed concrete for exterior and interior walls of the Natatorium. Soon, they will pour several hundred yards of concrete to form the pool bottom. About half of the Natatorium exterior block walls have been completed. Next, the masons will cover the block walls with brick and mortar. The pool mechanical equipment, which regulates water temperature and chlorine levels, will be installed in the new mechanical spaces during the spring and summer months.

Throughout this time, crews have been working inside the building to prepare the 3rd and 4th floors for administrative use and HVAC systems, respectively. The 4th floor HVAC system will provide heating and cooling to the newly refurbished areas of the original building. On the 3rd floor, electricians installed data, power and telephone conduits, carpenters installed studs and dry wall, plumbers installed water and waste piping, pipe fitters installed HVAC lines and fire protection lines, and sheet metal workers installed HVAC ductwork. Once the new CL&P power system has been completed, we expect to move the staff into their new offices. The new men’s and women’s first floor locker rooms and the family changing area have also been under construction.

Over the next few months, the deep end of the pool with the new pool deck, columns, and trusses will be completed. The contractor’s block wall and brick operation will shift to finish that end of the pool. The new perimeter windows, roofing and roof HVAC equipment installation will follow the block and brick work. Next, the contractor will install the electrical system, HVAC system, lighting, fire protection, and the new score board and timing system. Then a crew will meticulously place ceramic tile in the pool and on the pool deck. Finally, the contractor will install the new diving boards, ladders and access ramp. The new 1st floor men’s and women’s locker room facilities are scheduled to open this summer just before the Natatorium opens.

This is an exciting time at the Greenwich Family Y and we are so grateful to our donors for making it possible!
