2007-2008 Coaching Staff
Mark Sedlak will serve as the new Head Coach of the Marlins Swim Team. Sedlak previously served as Head Junior Coach and Assistant Senior Coach for the New Canaan YMCA Caimans as well as Aquatics Director and Head Coach at Greenwich Country Club. This fall, the Marlins Swim Team will find a home in the Y's brand new 50-meter by 25-yard Olympic-size pool.
Mark Sedlak has been coaching the Caimans since 2002. During his tenure, Sedlak coached multiple Connecticut Age Group champions, YMCA New England champions and YMCA National Age Group top 16 swimmers. Sedlak coached the Caimans’ 11-12 year old boy’s 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay teams to the 2005-06 Connecticut State Age Group Championship. That same year the boy’s 200-yard freestyle relay set the YMCA New England record. The relay team broke a record which was set by Sedlak himself, as part of the 1986 New Canaan YMCA team.
A longtime swimmer, Sedlak captured the 13-14 national title in the 50-yard freestyle, for which he still holds the state record. Sedlak went on to achieve the National High School All-American champion in this event while swimming for The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ. He also swam as the freestyle anchor of the men’s National Record breaking 200-yard medley relay, and was selected as a member of the 1989 United States National Team.
Sedlak earned a B.A. in Journalism from The University of North Carolina in 1995. While attending UNC, he was a varsity member of the Tar Heels Swimming Team, where he was an All American, ACC Champion, NCAA finalist and Olympic Trials qualifier.
Tim Corcoran, a past Connecticut swimmer and state record holder joins the Marlins as the new Senior swim coach. He spent the last three years as head age group coach for the New Canaan Caimans. This past season he had twenty swimmers achieve age group cuts with multiple age group champions. More than double his first season. The past 2 years Tim was also assistant coach for the New Canaan Rams girls high school team which placed 2nd at state championships and 5th at state open championships.
Tim was a two-time national age group champion in both the 100 meter and 200 yard butterfly. He broke ten state records between 94-98 in the butterfly and individual medley events and won the Connecticut high school State Open 100 butterfly three years in row as well as victory's in the 200im and 500 free. His senior year he set the State Open record in butterfly and placed second at Junior Nationals in the 200 yard butterfly. He was also a 16 time national finalist and his 13/14 100 meter butterfly was ranked the 4th fastest swim in US history.
Kristina returns for another exciting Marlins swim season. Kristina has been with Marlins for six years. When she started coaching Marlins, the team had only 35 swimmers. Each year, she watched the team grow bigger and stronger. Kristina served as Marlins Head Coach from 2005 to 2007. Last year, for the first time, two Marlins swimmers qualified for and competed at the Connecticut Age Group Championships, with one swimmer taking two third places. Five Marlins swimmers qualified and participated at the New England YMCA Championship at Harvard University in Massachusetts. Kristina originally is from Lithuania. She swam for Lithuanian National swim team in High School. After graduating high school, she attended Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education specializing on swimming and swam for their swim team. She also taught and coached swimming there. Kristina also works as a private instructor at the Greenwich Family YMCA. Kristina is an ASCA Level 2 certified and Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certified
coach.
Connie Wu is originally from China, where she swam for the Chinese National Team from 1996-1998 under the current Chinese Olympic coach. She excelled at all the strokes with standout performance in the 200 IM, an event in which she placed second at the National Championships and went on to the Olympic trials. Connie was the assistant coach at the Physical Education College where she trained numerous nationally ranked swimmers. She came to the US in 2004 and started her coaching tenure with the Marlins in 2005. She is also a private swim instructor for the YMCA. Connie is an open water swimmer who competed in the 16-mile Swim Across the Sound race in which she placed 2nd in 2006 and 3rd in 2007. Connie is also a swim official in both the Metro Swim league in NY and CT Swimming. She is an ASCA level 2 Coach and is actively working on her level 3
certification.
