What can exercise do for me?

According to the National Institute on Aging, older people have much to gain from exercise and staying physically active.

There are four types of exercises that older adults can do to help gain health benefits:

  • Endurance exercise helps increase breathing and heartrates and can improve the health of the circulatory system.
  • Strength exercises and weight bearing activities build muscle, increase metabolism, helping to keep weight and blood sugar in check.
  • Balance exercises help prevent falls, a major cause of injury in older people that sometimes leads to disability and loss of independence.
  • Flexibility exercises such as stretching help keep your body limber and may also play a part in preventing falls.

Challenging exercise and physical activities done regularly, even at a moderate level, may help many older adults improve their health and delay a variety of disabilities associated with aging.
